When do you program?
More and more as of late I have been finding that I do most of my programming at work (as I should), and most of my reading at home. At any given time I am reading 3 or 4 books, and trying to keep up with numerous blogs. I have such a backlog of things I want to read that programming at home is often not an option. Not to mention the fact that my family is growing (a 2 yr. old and another on the way). So, I don’t hunch over at my keyboard into the wee hours of the morning like I used to. So, when do you program?

I program when I have excess of motivation. Lately I have been programming until the wee hours of the morning as well as full time during the week. When I don’t have motivation, then its time to go do something fun away from my computer!

As with Marc, an excess of motivation is the only time I code. That usually only occurs between the hours of 9pm and 3am for some strange reason. If I wasn’t self-employed that would be problematic

In my late twenties, before the birth of my daughter, I regularly stayed up hammering away at the keyboard into the early morning (and I was teaching High School Programming at the time). I’m lucky if I can make it to 10:00pm now.

I’m in that self employed, working from home with a wife and two kids rut. I typically start about 5pm and code till about 5am … with breaks in between for putting the kids to bed and watching a movie with the wife. I must say though, I think I do my BEST coding at the coffee-shop about mid afternoon. Thats when i really get to explore new ideas.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment Russ. 5am sounds like you’re finishing just in time to say good morning to the little ones. I feel like I work a lot, and about once a week I’m up until 1am doing work, but 5am is too late/early for me! Hopefully you balance all that work with some non-work stuff.
